My Visual Poem

During the second quarter we had to create a Visual Poem. With this opportunity, I decided to write a poem about a place that I cherish; Hanalei. I was excited to film footage for this project because I got to remind myself of how lucky I am to live in such a beautiful place like Hanalei. I decided to revolve my poem on my outlook of this amazing place and what others may think of it too. I know that everyone has that one special place where they could just go and forget about all of their problems, so I choose a topic where people could relate upon.

Throughout my video I applied several effects to bring out the feeling I was trying to create. For example, with the clips of the sunset I enhanced the colors so the audience could feel like they were at the beach watching the enchanting sunset. In another clip I slowed down the motion and towards the end, I included a transition that fades so my last lines and picture could linger in the audience's minds.

Over-all, I believe my project had a great end result. I thought my poem had a good feel to it, my visuals accompanied my wording well, and I believe I edited my footage accurately. I am quite satisfied with my result, but there is a couple of things I could improve. With a little more time, I could have re-filmed my poem lines so it would sound more clear and it could have also been read a little slower. But again, I think I did a great job and I'm glad that I could share my love for my home with everyone.

Please feel free to watch my video down below

  1. Your poem was read nice and clearly. I think you should have applied the kens burns effect to more of your pictures. Overall great applicable b-roll and nice sequencing.

  2. I really like you b-roll of the beach and you and your sister. You could of turned down the audio in the background so we can hear you. I also like you time lapse of the beach. Great Job!

  3. I liked how you used different b-roll throughout the entire video. I think that you could've lowered the audio levels a little bit to even it out. I also liked how you showed emotion in your voiceover and added text layovers.

  4. I liked all of it, a lot.
I don't think there was room for improvement, it was as good as you can get.

  5. I really love your time lapse of the waves rolling.
I noticed one little error where you were saying something but we couldn't quite hear it, I think it was "tears" or something.
    Really awesome visual poem though!!

  7. The audio was very clear and easy to hear. I think that the relevance of a few clips of B-Roll could be improved. Despite that, you did a really awesome job of filming beautiful clips that really show off the beauty of Hanalei, and you further enhanced them in FCPX. Awesome job!

  8. I really liked how your whole poem rhymed.
Honestly, I think your poem was done very well, no mistakes.
I also liked the ending of the picture of Hanalei, then it faded away.

  9. Hiya Leleaka! AWesome work this time on your visual poem! Your B-Roll is absolutely stunning like your picture in the end of your poem. That was breathtaking. I think you could have improved on speaking more slowly because you were speaking a tad too fast on some parts. Either way, your voice was very clear and had a lot of emotions to it. Keep up the great work, Leleaka!

  10. I liked the really clear and nice shots of B-Roll.
There was like one cut in the audio but thats like the only thing that I could find.
The music and the words on the screen really smoothed it out and made it nice.

  12. I love that its your own, its something that relates to you and I love that. But there was a part where you got a little cut off that you could have fixed. I love how your b-roll is different from a lot of everyone elses its not just in school its where you are. oh and great time lapse!

  14. Great Leleaka! I love how you put really good expression in your voice.
I think if you adjusted your music to a tad lower, I think it would make the narraters voice clearer.
I do love the techniques you used in you poem. I really liked it.

  15. I really enjoyed the poem because I could really relate to it living on kauai and knowing how beautiful Hanalei Bay really is.
It was a little bit short and one part had to loud of backround audio
All of your shots were really focused and easy to see.

  21. I really like the shot at the end of the mountain and the sun. At one point in the middle the voiceover buffered but i'm not sure if that was the computer. The poem was really nice and personal.

  22. I really liked how your beginning grabbed my attention. Though, there was one part where maybe you could have left out the nat sounds. The ending was such a beautiful shot, and then it faded away nicely.
